Sunday Suppers

Sunday Suppers 2016-11-23T14:04:27+00:00

Sunday Suppers is a Co-op sponsored outreach initiative that benefits low-income and homebound seniors in the Swarthmore and surrounding communities.

According to Feeding America, 2.8 million households that include seniors experienced food insecurity and 3.9 million seniors live below the poverty line.

Sunday Suppers coordinates volunteers to cook for food insecure seniors in our communities. Whether they don’t have access to healthy food, unable to cook, or lack resources, each recipient receives 3-4 nutrient rich meals each month, home-cooked by the Sunday Suppers volunteers. Ingredients are bought at the Co-op and cooked in store after hours.

If you would like to take part in Sunday Suppers, please contact [email protected].

Charity Rounding and Background Info.

What is charity rounding?

Charity Rounding will take your purchase and round it to the next whole dollar. For example, if your purchase is $15.12, Charity Rounding will make it $16.00. That $.88 will be donated to the Swarthmore Co-op’s Community Outreach Program, Sunday Suppers.

If you would like to “Round” your purchase, simply let the cashier know at the time of your purchase. You will be asked at each transaction, so there is no long-term commitment, but your generosity will go a long way to help people in need throughout our community and the surrounding neighborhoods.

If you would like to give more, you can have the cashier press the button as many times as you’d like, adding another dollar each time!

SUPER SUNDAY! ROUND UP FOR SUNDAY SUPPERS | FIRST SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH

With our Charity Rounding program, we try to respect your shopping experience and want to limit the amount of questions we ask and time it takes to complete your transaction. That being said, on the first Sunday of each month, all bets are off! We will ask everyone, everytime they are checking out at the registers if they would like to donate the change from their transaction to Sunday Suppers. We hope to generate funds to sustain the program by having a monthly fundraising drive. Every little bit helps and we appreciate your generosity!

WHAT IS SUNDAY SUPPERS?

Sunday Suppers is a Co-op sponsored outreach initiative that benefits low-income and homebound seniors in the Swarthmore and surrounding communities.
WHY DO THIS?

According to Feeding America, 2.8 million households that include seniors experience food insecurity and 3.9 million seniors live below the poverty line.

For seniors, protecting oneself from food insecurity and hunger is more difficult than for the general population. With the projected increase in population, seniors are likely to experience more difficulty in gaining access to a healthy diet due to lack of transportation, functional limitations, or health issues.

We want to make an impact in this community by cooking and delivering homemade, nutritious meals.

CAN I VOLUNTEER?

Sunday Suppers is always looking for volunteers to cook and deliver the meals once a month. In order to sign up for volunteering, please contact [email protected]

IS THIS TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

Right now, no. We are in the process of converting the Outreach Program into a 501(c)3 Charitable Foundation. Once this is finalized, we will let you know and you can use it as a tax deduction.
Sponsored by the Swarthmore Co-op, and supported by businesses and individuals in the Swarthmore Community.

How can you help?

You can refer seniors who fit our criteria to [email protected] All referrals are kept strictly confidential. Or you can volunteer to cook or deliver meals.
