Who are we?

The Swarthmore CO-OP is the third oldest food cooperative in the country, with a long history of serving as a community anchor and beloved neighborhood grocery store for both its members as well as non-member shoppers — “anyone can shop and anyone can join.” We place a strong emphasis on providing local and sustainably-grown/raised items and maintaining our important role as a full-service community grocery store. The CO-OP has approximately $6M in annual revenues and about 40 employees.

The Swarthmore Co-op is a one-of-a-kind cooperative food market in Delaware County looking for full-time team members for our high-performing Produce and Grocery teams.  We focus on local, organic and sustainable foods, and promoting healthy lifestyles to our community. Customer Service Team Member

What is your role of a Customer Service Team member?

A customer service team member’s priority is precisely that—Customer Service!  This Co-op role is central to the Co-op mission, and you’ll ensure that each and every Co-op shopper is treated with respect, attention, and care.  As a cashier and customer service team member, you’ll be handling customer purchases, providing information about membership and events and creating a friendly, local feel for valued shoppers. Accuracy and attention to detail are key in this position.

What we need from you —  

  • Maintain a sense of energy in the store by taking initiative to do what’s needed.
  • Greet customers in a welcoming, warm way.
  • Perform check-out activities for customer and member purchases quickly and accurately.
  • Help customers navigate through the store and assist in finding back stock items when needed
  • Become familiar with our Co-op products, policies and procedures.
  • Become knowledgeable about the store and be the best resource possible to field customer questions.
  • Demonstrate reliability and professionalism in your work habits and appearance.
  • Help maintain a clean and well-kept environment throughout the store and outside dining areas.
  • Respond to phone inquiries in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Demonstrate an ability to accurately handle cash and maintain accountability for it.

Fresh Foods Team Member

What is your role?

A Fresh Foods team member’s priority is preparation of great dishes from top-quality ingredients for our CO-OP shoppers!  You’ll ensure that each and every shopper is offered the best signature dishes and made-to-order deli items that the CO-OP can create, and is treated with respect, attention, and care.  You’ll be trained by experienced chefs and senior team members, and you’ll provide our shoppers with information and recommendations about foods that meet their individual tastes and dietary needs.  You’ll also have an opportunity to be part of our events teams, and to learn some basics of catering as well.

[Please note that this is not seasonal position, and the CO-OP is looking for someone who is available to work throughout the year.]

What we need from you —

  • Assist customers in selecting deli sandwiches and meats, and prepared foods dishes at the CO-OP.
  • Become familiar with preparation of our signature dishes, ingredients, and other related products.
  • Become knowledgeable about weighing, pricing and packaging customer selections properly.
  • Maintain a sense of energy in the store by taking initiative to do what’s needed.
  • Demonstrate reliability and professionalism in your work habits and appearance.
  • Help maintain a clean and well-kept food preparation and deli case area in the store.

What You Offer in Skills and Qualifications —

  • You have availability to work during the week and on weekends.
  • You can maintain a positive, can-do attitude with customers despite daily pressures.
  • Some knowledge of deli or food operations preferred, but not required.
  • Prior retail experience preferred but not required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age (21 preferred).

Grocery Team Member

Our Grocery Team Members ensure that our shoppers are met with a fully-stocked, well-merchandised grocery section that supports healthy living in our community.  Our shoppers rely on our high-energy Grocery team to:

  • Know our full line of healthy food products, our grocery floor lay-out, and safe stocking techniques
  • Make recommendations to customers about the best products to meet individual nutrition and lifestyle needs (we’ll go the extra mile to meet a unique product need for a shopper)
  • Learn the basics of creative merchandising for all of our grocery products including dairy, frozen, and general merchandise
  • Always provide up-to-date, accurate pricing information on products
  • Ensure that grocery products are stored, organized, stocked and shelved effectively
  • Participate in the selection and marketing of new products, and in special event
