General Manager Announcement from 2012
A Letter from Sharon Mester, President, Board of Directors
Dear Member-Owners and Customers,
I am very pleased to announce that Marc BrownGold has been appointed general manager of the Swarthmore Co-op, effective immediately. You may already know Marc as the fresh foods manager of the Co-op and, most recently, as the interim general manager, a position that he capably assumed while the Board of Directors conducted the search for a general manager. After interviewing many candidates, the Board ultimately determined that Marc is the right person to manage the Swarthmore Co-op as it heads into its 75th year. Marc is committed to the ideals of the Co-op, is passionate about food, is interested in people, and has solid managerial experience—as the fresh foods manager and as interim general manager, and in running successful food ventures in Philadelphia, Lambertville, NJ, and Bucks County.
Marc is a native of the Philadelphia area and a graduate of Temple University. Marc’s career in food is extensive—he started at an early age in a family-owned catering and restaurant businesses, worked in the Steve Poses organization (City Bites, 16th Street Bar and Grill, and Frog/Commissary Catering), and served as the general manager and executive chef of Hamilton’s Grill Room in Lambertville, NJ. After Hamilton’s, Marc decided to go out on his own, first with a food market and catering business called JustFood, and then with a similarly named restaurant, JustEat. Seven very successful years later, Marc sold both businesses to pursue his passion in local and sustainable food. Fortunately for us, this decision brought him to the Swarthmore Co-op.
Marc has been married to Theresa for 26 years. Theresa, co-managed JustFood and JustEat with Marc, and is now pursuing her original training in the arts as a painter, using portrait painting to document the impact of social issues in a project called Art as Social Inquiry. Marc and Theresa have two sons, Max, an IT consultant, who is also pursuing his M.Ed. in secondary education with a focus in physics and resides in West Chester, and Luke, a developer at a digital creative agency who lives in Brooklyn.
Please join us in congratulating Marc on his appointment. Marc looks forward to getting to know all our members and shoppers, so if you don’t yet know him, please introduce yourself. We are excited by the enthusiasm and possibilities Marc brings to his new position, and we believe our Co-op will grow and prosper under his management.
Thanks for your support.
