Serving the Swarthmore Community
Since 1937. OPEN TO ALL!

The Swarthmore Co-op is a uniquely Swarthmore institution. Started by Swarthmore residents more than 70 years ago, it is principally owned by the cooperative's shareholding customers and exists for the benefit and vitality of the Swarthmore community and the Co-op's employees. The Co-op seeks to provide a convenient, friendly and helpful market dedicated to supplying quality meat, produce and commodity goods at reasonable prices to allow for the Co-op's continued existence as a cornerstone of Swarthmore's community. Anyone can shop! Anyone can join!

A little background ...

In general, cooperatives are formed by groups of people with common needs for the common good. Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, responsibility, democracy, equity, and solidarity. The Swarthmore Co-op was organized in the 1930’s from these principles and has served the community since then. Click on History to find out more about the store’s journey.

The most important thing is that the Co-op truly is “your store!” The Co-op has been here for over 60 years to serve the members and the community, and with your support, it will always be there.

The continued success of this community venture is directly related to how many people get involved. If you care about:

• The sources and quality of your food,
• Supporting your local economy,
• The Cooperative principles, and the
• Revitalization of Swarthmore,

then you owe it to yourself, your family, and your community to become part of the “new” Swarthmore Co-op now!  If you simply want a place to meet your neighbors and your friends, that’s a perfect reason to join too!
